Kustomtype is an independent type foundry based in Belgium, founded in 2011 by type designer and graphic artist Coert De Decker. Kustomtype fonts are designed for logotype, packaging, posters, T-shirts, signage, and design products with a modern feel.

Unique job, unique fonts

I know, a font designer you don’t come across often. I’m Coert De Decker, from a charming village in the south of Flanders. Kustomtype was born in 2011 after decades of drawing, testing, and refining. Meanwhile, I offer 80 unique font families in my webshop, one by one custom made. Welcome to Kustomtype!

How it all started...

Around the age of 16, I was tired of school and a local company was looking for an illustrator. Without any training, but with a lot of enthusiasm and of course some talent, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. I then drew letters manually on tombstones. Back then, the number of fonts were very limited. That motivated me to create my own fonts. My love for letters really started then and I haven’t let go since.

At that time, I was already drawing posters for parties or for performances of friends with their bands—and desktop publishing didn’t exist yet. All we did was cut and paste and photocopy. My knowledge about how a typeface is created, how big the spacing should be, and so on was all gained by being around it from a young age and devouring dozens of books on the subject. I also trained at the Plantin Institute of Typography in Antwerp, where I was taught by all kinds of masters of the trade.

A good typeface evokes feelings

At Kustomtype, you will find something different, something unique, and something authentic. A good font exudes a certain feeling and provokes an emotional reaction in many people. The Kustomtype font catalog consists of a nice selection of 80 unique font families with about 135 fonts.

Kustomtype with a K?

Everything that contains the term “Kustom” has to do with the subculture. “Kustom Culture” stands for the way of life of special people, artists, which deviates from the usual way of life. They most commonly come from the alternative music world or are graphic designers.
